Nokia getting down to brass tacks on its Internet business

Nokia has removed one of the key obstacles for takeup of its new Internet offering, combining sign-ins for its overall services site, Ovi.com, and for its media sharing device.

Ovi.com is something like Apple’s MobileMe. You can sync your contacts, maps, music and documents from your PC to your online account in Ovi.com and access them on the go. Sounds pretty cool.

Nokia has completed an $8.1 billion acquisition of a mapping company called Navteq to jump-start its Internet business as growth in the cell phone market stalls. The handset maker has gathered access to all of the services to its Ovi.com site, but so far they have all demanded additional usernames and passwords, something analysts see as one of the major obstacles for takeup.

“We are pleased to announce that as part of improving your experience with Share on Ovi, we have merged our sign-in system with Ovi.com,” Nokia said in a letter to clients. “This is a key step in integrating Ovi,” Nokia said. Nokia said earlier this month it aims to make annual revenue of at least 2 billion euros ($2.79 billion) from Internet services in 2011, focusing on navigation, music, games, messaging and media — but is battling with more established rivals such as Google, Apple and YahooNokia has not released user numbers for its Internet services, which created revenue of 115 million euros in July-to-September quarter.

Nokia N97 Hands-on Demo

Following on from the earlier post about N97, here is a hands-on demo of the Nokia N97 scheduled to be released by mid 2009.

Nokia N97 - the fight for the Iphone spot is on now

Finally Nokia has come out with a beater I guess. It invokes more a cool headed enthusiasm rather than the knee-jerk hysteria of the Iphone. For good measure the Iphone has given the mobile world a jerk and the results are good to see. The impressive Nokia N97 is here.

Twenty-four hours after teasing us with news of a major product announcement, Nokia officially took the wraps off its mystery smartphone on Tuesday at the Nokia World 2008 Conference in Barcelona, Spain. And despite some close guesses, no one got it quite right so without further ado, let us introduce you to the Nokia N97.

Part of the company’s high-end N series of multimedia computers, the N97 trumps all previous models with a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard and a tilting 3.5-inch touch screen (anyone else reminded of the AT&T Tilt or Sony Ericsson Xperia X1?). Yes, there’s the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, but the N97 includes phone capabilities and is designed for the “needs of Internet-savvy consumers.”

For example, the smartphone provides easy access to a number social networking sites and the Web browser supports streaming Flash videos. The N97 also introduces something Nokia calls “social location,” which uses the capabilities of the integrated A-GPS sensors and electronic compass to automatically update your social networks or let you share your location via photos or videos with friends. The Home screen can be personalized with widgets of favorite Web and social networking sites. Finally, the N97 is fully compatible with Nokia’s Ovi Internet services, which include the Nokia Music Store, Nokia Maps, and the N-Gage gaming platform–though these services have yet to fully launch in the United States.

The Symbian-based smartphone also features a music and video player, a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, and a whopping 32GB of onboard memory that can be expanded with a 16GB microSD card. The quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) world phone is HSDPA-capable handset, but currently only supports the 900/1900/2100MHz bands (AT&T’s 3G network runs on 850/1900MHz while T-Mobile runs on 1700/2100MHz). There is integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, however.

The Nokia N97 is expected to ship in Europe during the first half of 2009 with an estimated price of 550 Euros ($695 U.S.). and as for the U.S. citizens, we won’t see it for 18 months anyway, there is no official word on when we’ll see the N97 in Asia. And, we’re still waiting for the Nokia N96. Of course, there’s always the possibility of buying the smartphone unlocked and who knows, maybe Nokia will surprise us.

Obviously, the Nokia N97 takes a jab at other popular touch-screen smartphones, namely the Apple iPhone 3G, T-Mobile G1, and RIM BlackBerry Storm, but will it succeed? It certainly has the substance and style to take on the big boys, but will it go the way of the Xperia X1 where the lack of a U.S. carrier and a high price tag will severely limit its adoption in the States? Either way, we think it looks like a pretty sweet device and we’re looking forward to having some personal hands-on time with the Nokia N97. Speaking of which, CNET Executive Editor David Carnoy was on hand at Nokia’s flagship store in New York to get a sneak peek at the smartphone and grabbed some video, which we’ll upload tomorrow. For now, I’d love to hear your initial thoughts on the Nokia N97.

Will put up the technical specs in a while!

Nokia’s QWERTY slider E75 spotted in the wild again

In the “form factors Nokia hasn’t fully explored, but probably should” bucket, side-sliding QWERTY candybars ranks pretty dang high on the list, so we’re delighted to see that — as far as we can tell, anyway — Espoo’s still hard at work banging out the details of its E75. We’re told to expect WiFi (naturally), a 3.2-megapixel camera, and a 2.4-inch display, but more importantly, you’ve got a generous keyboard that should give the S740 a serious run for its money. We’re a bit concerned about usability on a totally flush keyboard like this (E90 anyone?), but hey, maybe that’s the reason it hasn’t been announced yet, right?

orkut for S60, now with photo uploads and picture galleries

Posted in Gadgets, Google, Mobiles on November 23rd, 2008 by sunchandy – Be the first to comment

When we launched the mobile (xhtml) version of orkut back in April on m.orkut.com, we were overwhelmed by its adoption.

However, Google always tries to build our products for a diverse group of users. Many people access orkut from their smartphones, many of which can support more advanced functionality. So today we are launching a new mobile orkut experience that is optimized for Symbian Series 60 (3rd edition) phones. The new orkut works on many popular phones, including Nokia’s Nseries (N95, N82, etc.) and Samsung’s SGH models. And we have added a bunch of new features including photo uploads, picture galleries, click-to-call, and quick friend searches. But the best part of it all - everything is available without the need to download any special client. Just open your phone browser, type http://m.orkut.com, and if you have a Symbian Series 60 3rd edition phone, you are good to go!

So go ahead and upload all those wonderful pictures you took at the beach or at the city’s latest dancing spot, and then start calling your orkut friends to plan the next gathering.

And, don’t forget to write to us and share your ideas for how we can make the orkut experience on your mobile phone even better.
